For Madame Butterfly’s Memoir, Iara Guedes drew on imaginary memories of the spirit of a woman dead in Japan in 1885. A young geisha betrayed by her western husband, the symbol of the meeting of two different worlds. This ethereal performance reveals the dramatic intensity and underlying violence of this thoroughly Japanese tragedy melting in a symbolic modernity. Cio Cio San’s spirit is remembering, living, waiting, resignifying her past life.
